HEADING NORTH on the main Yellowstone road, we turned right towards Lamar Valley. Suddenly, the cars going both directions were stopped and parked on the side of the road. Along the road, a herd of bison marched steadily west. I popped out the passenger door and began shooting, careful to keep the car between myself and the advancing herd. In this way, I was able to photograph this bison mother and calf from a (safe) distance of fifteen feet.
