Mammoth Springs is an enormous limestone deposit, located on a fault line in the northwest corner of the Yellowstone caldera. Groundwater, heated by the volcano, bubbles up as a hot spring, leaving layered deposits. The blues, turquoises, and oranges are algae and bacteria that grow in the hot water. When we arrived, a herd of roughly twenty Roosevelt Elk was crossing the road into the limestone area, led by giant bull with a seven-point rack on each side. The males were rutting and rangers warned people to stay in their cars. The bull sat down among a group of females and started bugling. Loudly. In the photograph you can see Fort Yellowstone at the base of the small mountain.
