AT MAMMOTH SPRINGS, in Yellowstone National Park, a line of people and cars lay between a herd of elk and their destination next to the hot springs. Park rangers with bullhorns issued loud warnings to get back in their cars or to retreat further up the wooden stairs to the top of the springs. A huge bugling buck—it was rutting season—was the last to go. The younger bucks, like this one, quickly moved out of the way as head buck moved across.
