Red-tailed Tropicbird

Kilauea Lighthouse and National Wildlife Area on the north coast of Kauai offers an extraordinary experience—hundreds of seabirds circling the headland. Red-footed boobies by the hundreds nest on the southern bluff. Albatross nest on the opposite one. Tropicbirds are my favorites and I was fortunate to catch this one hovering in a strong wind. This photograph is on the cover of my book Aves. I described the experience in a Bird of the Week.
